PHENOLIV IS AN EXTRA HIGH PHENOLIC OLIVE OIL
Produced from olives of the Olympia variety that were gathered during the 2019 harvest in Arcadia, Greece, PhenOLIV Organic is one of the highest phenolic extra virgin olive oils in the world. The Mathiopoulos family selected the olives with the highest level of polyphenols in their groves at The Greek Olive Estate to make it. They harvested early, in October, because that is when their olives produce the healthiest oil.
Their years of research, analysis, and consultation with scientists taught the team at the Greek Olive Estate how to increase the amount of polyphenols in their organic extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). They learned, for example, that some of the most important phenolic compounds (including oleocanthal and oleacein) are created during milling, so they are found only in virgin olive oil, not in other products. They also discovered natural ways to enable their EVOO to remain high phenolic—and extra healthy—for a long time.

HEALTHY PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS (POLYPHENOLS)
There are many types of naturally occurring phenolic compounds in high quality extra virgin olive oil. The official EU health claim for olive oil (European Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012) states, “Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.” This claim can be used for olive oils containing at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of olive oil, and it applies when 20 g of EVOO are consumed each day.
Two of the phenols included in the EU health claim for olive oil, oleocanthal and oleacein (derivatives of the hydroxytyrosol mentioned in the claim), have been the subject of recent scientific research. This research suggests that these anti-inflammatory antioxidants may help combat neurodegenerative diseases and cancers, as well as helping to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
In general, more bitter and pungent EVOOs have higher levels of phenols. Laboratory analyses of PhenOLIV Organic (such as the Certificate of Analysis pictured) confirm that it is an excellent source of healthy polyphenols, including the tyrosol and derivatives of hydroxytyrosol mentioned in the EU health claim. In fact, PhenOLIV Organic includes such a large quantity of these phenolic compounds that a mere 10 ml is more than enough to meet the criteria of the health claim—rather than the 20 ml most companies aim for.
